This evening GEORGE HADOW (drums) and DIRK SERRIES (guitar), both label affiliates, are kicking off their series of 4 concerts to promote their CHAPEL album on Creative Sources. The kick-off is at this lovely new venue KLANKHAVEN in Antwerpen (Belgium). See you down the road.

A NEW WAVE OF JAZZ’s affiliates COLIN WEBSTER (sax), DIRK SERRIES (guitar), ANDREW LISLE (percussion) and JOHN EDWARDS (double bass) recorded a fantastic album for RAW TONK RECORDS. The LP was released last year and finally on January 30rd, they are playing live for the first time.

E se volete andare su Wikipedia, scoprirete l’intera carriera del bassista inglese, un peso massimo della scena free jazz che ha suonato con Louis Moholo, Eddie Prevost, Lol Coxhill, Phil Minton, Evan Parker, Elton Dean, Sunny Murray, John Butchere un mare di altri musicisti leggendari.In confronto la carriera del nostro amato Dirk Serries (chi scrive è cresciuto con i dischi di VidnaObmana) sembra quasi scomparire, dato che è da relativamente pochi anni che il musicista belga si è introdotto nella scena free-jazz europea.
Lo raccontavamo pochi mesi fa: dopo aver navigato i mari oscuri della scena post-industriale e quelli malinconici della dark-ambient, Serries ha preso ad improvvisare con la chitarra elettrica (Fear Falls Burning) prima di scoprire il meraviglioso mondo della fire music e delle chitarre acustiche, decidendo di pubblicare la nuova musica con il suo nome di battesimo.
“Melancholia” è già la quarantasettesima pubblicazione della New Wave Of Jazz, l’etichetta fondata dallo stesso Dirk Serries nel 2017, appena cinque anni fa. Un catalogo sterminato che non smette di stupire con la qualità delle sue pubblicazioni. “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”, è il motto dell’etichetta belga.
“Melancholia” colpisce già dal titolo. Come sposare il fuoco dell’improvvisazione più libera con la sensazione di perdita e smarrimento dello spleen più romantico? Ci riescono egregiamente John Edwards e Dirk Serries lungo l’evolversi di due improvvisazioni che trascinano l’ascoltatore in un turbine di stravolgimenti senza fine. Il contrabbasso all’inizio della prima improvvisazione in scaletta sembra voler fare il verso alla nervosa chitarra di Serries: ma il gioco dura solo qualche minuto prima che i ruoli comincino a sdoppiarsi e finalmente trovare i due musicisti completamente coordinati nel creare atmosfere in continua mutazione. Un dialogo che non trova sosta lungo i 21 minuti del brano.
C’è una gran fisicità nel modo in cui i due musicisti percuotono le corde dei propri strumenti ma anche un incredibile orecchio rivolto verso l’altro. E la seconda improvvisazione in scaletta è ancora più a fuoco. Sicuramente fire music, ma anche blues, jazz e deep listening music: una cosmologia che prende forma ogni volta la si ascolta. Silenzi che pesano più di mille note. Da ascoltare e riascoltare.” Ondarock – Italy

“Op ‘New Invention’ tonen rietblazer Colin Webster en drummer Andrew Lisle zich gepokt en gemazeld: de twee hebben er al behoorlijk wat platenwerk en kilometers opzitten (onder andere in Kodian Trio met Serries) en dat is onmiskenbaar te horen aan hun samenspel. Dat is behoorlijk energetisch, maar het duo trekt haast nooit de alles-moet-kapot-kaart. Webster blaast frenetiek en wild op zijn altsax, maar blijft altijd lucide en inventief en Lisle is daar de perfecte ritmische tegenknie voor. Het samenspel is dusdanig strak, dat het duo wel een centrale zenuwbaan lijkt te delen.” Gonzo Circus – Belgium/The Netherlands

“Uit een heel ander vaatje (en een iets oudere generatie): ‘On Sunday’, een opname uit 2010 vanop het podium van de Brusselse Archiduc, waarop het Duits-Britse sax-gitaarduo Stefan Keune en John Russell aan de slag gaat met de Belgische percussionist Kris Vanderstraeten. De freejazz die op ‘On Sunday’ beleden wordt, zit verder van de roots dan het werk van Webster en Lisle –Keune blaast niet de vingervlugge lijnen van Webster, maar korte stoten geluid, reutels vaak. John Russell is dan weer een abstracte akoestische gitarist uit de school van Derek Bailey (we gokken dat Russell minstens een béétje invloed is geweest in Dirk Serries’ post-ambient spel) die alle geluid bruikbaar acht, maar niet snel op een zuiver getokkeld B7add13 akkoord zal betrapt worden. Het klinkt hermetischer, maar minstens even amusant. Wie Kris Vanderstraeten ooit aan het werk zag met zijn speelgoeddrumkit weet: speelplezier is de sleutel waarmee je naar dit soort experiment moet luisteren.” Gonzo Circus – Belgium/Netherlands

“The Other Lies is a collection of six improvised duets performed by Tom Jackson on clarinet Colin Webster on alto and baritone saxophones.Tom Jackson is very accomplished in the fields of contemporary classical music and free improvisation. He also holds a Ph.D from Canterbury Christ Church University. Colin Webster is a musician whose works I’ve reviewed here before. When one of his releases comes up on my Bandcamp feed I always take notice. He’s a prolific and under appreciated figure in the free jazz scene. I consider him a leader in the genre. The Other Lies is a very austere collection in terms of sound and song titles. One cannot help but think of Anthony Braxton. The relationship between Jackson and Webster is fantastic. The vibe is very natural and conversational. It feels like Webster probably sets the tone and Jackson is extraordinarily astute in return. However, that’s just a guess on the process from my part. Obviously, I can’t say for certain. What I can say is that these are great improvisations from two fantastic musicians.”
