Here’s a freshly published review of DANIEL THOMPSON’s 2019 album ‘FINCH’ on the Dutch Moors webzine. The album is still available from our store or bandcamp.

“Gitarist Daniel Thompson heeft sinds kort zijn eigen platenlabel Empty Birdcage Records, maar hij heeft eerder onder meer voor het Vlaamse label New Wave of Jazz van gitarist Dirk Serries al opnames gemaakt die ik zojuist ontdekte en die de moeite waard zijn om nog even in de lucht te steken – je kunt niet genoeg geïmproviseerde muziek vastleggen, vind ik, want heel vaak blijkt dat je bij nadere beluistering dan verrassende ontdekkingen doet. Finch is een solo-album – je hoort Thompson drie kwartier lang in vier improvisaties – in de eerste begint hij buitengewoon ingetogen en stil, maar later gaat hij zijn instrument behandelen op een manier zoals we dat niet vaak horen bij gitaristen – het wrijven over de snaren bijvoorbeeld wordt meestal als storend bijgeluid ervaren, maar Thompson gebruikt het hier nadrukkelijk in een van zijn improvisaties. In een solo-improvisatie kun je achter niemand verbergen, maar je kunt ook volledig voluit gaan – Thompson doet dat ook, vanaf de minimale start, met weinig noten en veel stilte tot de bijna chaotische stukken die onvoorspelbaar alle kanten op gaan, waardoor je als luisteraar steeds op scherp gezet wordt. Daar hou ik wel van. Unieke muziek dit, die steeds beter wordt naarmate je het album vaker draait.” Moors Magazine – The Netherlands

A NEW WAVE OF JAZZ’s affiliates COLIN WEBSTER (sax), DIRK SERRIES (guitar), ANDREW LISLE (percussion) and JOHN EDWARDS (double bass) recorded a fantastic album for RAW TONK RECORDS. The LP was released last year and finally on January 30rd, they are playing live for the first time.
