JACKSON/SERRIES/VANDERSTRAETEN – DANDELION (cd)

“Serries en Vanderstraeten stonden begin deze zomer in de PlusEtage, alleen toen met celliste Lucija Gregov. In gedachten zie ik Vanderstraeten weer zitten en denk ik terug aan wat ik toen schreef: “Vanderstraeten is …een verzamelaar van allerlei attributen waar je geluid mee kunt maken, letterlijk een koffer vol. Een handvol kleine trommeltjes dient daarbij vaker als ondergrond dan als instrumenten om zelf te bespelen”. Ik herken de vaak wat ongewone en soms vreemde geluiden hier dan ook direct. Geluiden die ook nu weer een prachtig decor vormen voor de invallen van Jackson en Serries. Overigens vaak meesterlijke invallen, zoals de prachtig zangerige partij van Jackson in ‘Violet Blue’, waarin we hem moeiteloos het complete register van zijn instrument horen bespelen, overigens wel met een voorkeur voor het hoog. En verderop horen we hem in een prachtig ingetogen duet met Vanderstraeten. Bijzonder is ook het begin van ‘Bright Yellow’ en de schermutselingen van Serries en Vanderstraeten.”

DIRK SERRIES with ANTON MOBIN / QUENTIN STOKART – STOCHASTIC REGIONS (cassette)

“De cassette ‘Stochastic Regions’ bevat zoals gezegd twee duetten. Op kant A horen we Serries met Mobin, op kant B met Stokart. Mobin werkt vrijwel altijd met zijn ‘prepared chamber’, een houten kistje met percussie en elektronica en dus ook hier, terwijl we Serries op een archtop gitaar horen. Het is een bijzondere combinatie die we in deze negen, vrij korte stukken horen, waarbij de klanken vaak opvallend goed met elkaar samenvallen. In het duet met Stokart is voor mij, ik speel geen gitaar, al helemaal niet meer te onderscheiden wie nu precies welk geluid maakt, een boeiend en over het algemeen vrij abstract snarenspel ontvouwen de twee gitaristen hier, vol onverwachte wendingen en muzikale vergezichten. Het gaat er soms heftig aan toe, terwijl we op andere momenten getrakteerd worden op bijzonder fragiele klanken, in ‘2.4’ overigens binnen één stuk.”

COLIN WEBSTER & MATTHEW GRIGG – GOOD TO BE BACK IN REALITY (cassette)

“‘Soft Atom’, het openingsstuk van ‘Good to be Back in Reality’ maakt direct duidelijk dat we hier met een ander type gitarist van doen hebben dan Serries. Waar die zo ongeveer eindigt als het gaat om experimentele klanken, begint Grigg. Laat dat ‘Soft’ hier overigens maar weg, want wat de twee hier na korte tijd creëren is overdadige noise. En het is dat ik weet dat Grigg gitaar speelt, horen doe ik het niet, het lijkt eerder het geluid van een machine die nodig aan een smeerbeurt toe is. Liefhebbers van een gezellig achtergrondmuziekje kunnen nu dus maar beter afhaken. In ‘Brain Free Circus’ ligt het volume iets lager, iets dat geenszins geldt voor de mate van abstractie. En het verbaast me ook hier weer wat je allemaal kunt met een gitaar en een altsax en hoe prachtig je kunt zondigen tegen de wetten van mooi spel, geniaal. En via de titel ‘Radio Grand Prix’ krijg ik direct de associatie van het aftasten van zenders. De fragmenten van Webster, abstracte noten zonder duidelijke richting en de noise van Grigg, het lijkt het helemaal. Nadat in ‘Special Consume’ het duo de lijn simpelweg doortrekt, komt het begin van ‘Feedback Self Service’ ineens als een aangename verrassing: een doeltreffende klankmist. Waaruit na verloop van tijd weer regelrechte noise opdoemt, ik had het kunnen weten, Webster steekt hier mijn tandarts naar de kroon. Nee, echte rust krijgen we pas in ‘Sweep Mind Clean’, het werd wel eens tijd, mooi bescheiden gesputter klinkt hier. Bijzonder tot slot is de drone in ‘Air Condition’, zeldzaam strak voor dit verder zeer abstracte album.”

UK’s Musique Machine just reviewed TRANSLUCENCE by RENNIE/ROBERTS/SERRIES, which we released earlier on this year. Still available from our bandcamp store.

“Translucence is a four-track example of the improv from bringing together highly prolific Belgian-based Dirk Serrries – acoustic guitar, London-based Tullis Rennie- Trombone, and also London-based Cath Roberts-baritone Sax. The album is often tight and edgy, yet at the same time playful and at points quite boisterous. The album appears as a CD on New Wave Of Jazz- which is curated/ run by Serrries. All of the labels releases come presented in identical white mini gatefolds which feature grey boxes, and inside we get a two-page write-up ( in grey text) about the CD and its players by Guy Peters.The four tracks were recorded live in the studio- with great clarity and balance with the recording capture/ mastering. And really at points, you can almost hear sparks and fire passing between the three players. We open with the nearing nine and half minutes of “Match” and here we find Serrries tightly strummed, strutted, and knocking guitar been bayed, roasted and manically trumpeted by Roberts and Rennie- there’s a wonderful taut urgency to the whole thing, and in the last quarter we get some great manic percussive flirts and darts appearing. The album’s title track comes in just sly of the thirteen-minute mark- with its mixture of tense and constant like honks & tight scrambling to picking guitar detail. Before moving into caustically smoky horn drift, and general angularly buzzing ‘n’ picking. All making for a wonderfully unpredictable run of a track. The album is finished off with its longest track “Found With In”, which comes in at just under the thirteen-and-a-half mark. Here we find strutting to scarping guitar warbling to cheekily trumping horn work. From time to time the guitar drops back for a more upwardly mellow-if slightly angular to playful feel. Translucence is a most worthy, at points nicely surprising and daring example of the improv form- and if you’re looking for a fire-up and urgent example of the form this will be for you..  let us hope these three work together down the line again.” Musique Machine – UK
