This Monday, May 1st and Tuesday, May 2nd A NEW WAVE OF JAZZ focuses on two events during which affiliated artists MARTINA VERHOEVEN and DIRK SERRIES will go into a musical dialogue with two musicians from the excellent Portuguese free jazz scene: saxophonist JOSE LENCASTRE on Monday (a JAZZBLAZZT event) and with guitarist LUIS LOPES on Tuesday at the Kapel Oude Klooster in Brecht (Belgium). Not to be missed for admirers of pure free improvisation.

Next in line are a lovely series of concerts in Belgium (at our favorite chapel in Brecht), at the incredible Jazzblazzt (Neeritter, The Netherlands) while one week later guitarist DIRK SERRIES is teaming up with Portugese saxophonist JOSE LENCASTRE for 3 gigs in Portugal. “Sinds hun eerste gezamenlijk concert in het Londense Oto Café (2015) hebben altsaxofonist Colin Webster, drummer Andrew Lisle en gitarist Dirk Serries een hechte onderlinge band opgebouwd met heel wat concerten op de teller en een reeks (live)opnamen. Kodian Plus is het trio uitgebreid met Charlotte Keeffe (trompet, flugelhorn) en Martina Verhoeven (piano). Meer dan interessante dames om mee de studio in te trekken gezien hun staat van dienst in de free- en improvisatiescene. Qua repertoirekeuze begeven de vijf zich op vertrouwd terrein. Dit betekent een ingesteldheid van volledige autonomie met respect voor elkaars instant ideeën en invallen. Hieraan geen gebrek. De voorgeschotelde stilte wordt aanvankelijk slechts opgevuld met delicate electro-akoestische effecten en licht kleppengegoochel op saxofoon. Stilaan voegen ze geluidssegmenten toe door elkaar te stimuleren en aan te sporen. Ondanks of net dankzij de vrijheid ontwikkelt zich een complex spel van ontrafelen, elimineren en aanvullen. Een dialoog die al eens klinkt als een krachtig dispuut of “noise concrète” maar evenzeer als de soundtrack voor een poëtisch samengesteld prentenkabinet. En natuurlijk met onverwachte kantelmomenten zoals de spacy passage halfweg ‘The Five-Headed Anomaly’. Onconventioneel en toch vertrouwd, allemaal ingeblikt op een dag.
