Label favorite UK/Belgian KODIAN TRIO is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Formed during a dazzling quartet concert (featuring John Dikeman) at Cafe Oto in London, the trio has since evolved into a working band that guarantees intense free improvisation and free jazz, with a touch of punk thrown in. The trio has released three studio albums and five live albums, the latter of which clearly demonstrate that this is primarily a live band meant to be seen, heard, and felt. For this 10th anniversary, they’ve set up a beautiful evening at the King Alfred Phoenix Theatre in London.

Guests that evening are QUARTZ SAND (Cath Roberts and Kate Carr) and the trio of ALAN WILKINSON, STEVE NOBLE and OREN MARSHALL.
Quartz Sand is the duo of Kate Carr (electronics, objects) and Cath Roberts (electronics). Long form textural explorations: horizontal organisation of interlocking crystals, fossiliferous drift, downward movement of rock debris. Alan Wilkinson/Steve Noble/Oren Marshall. Formed relatively recently, but with musical relationships spanning decades (all three were featured in the Company projects of the great guitarist Derek Bailey in the 80s and 90s), Alan Wilkinson on saxes and clarinets, Oren Marshall on tuba, and Steve Noble on drums, are three of the most experienced and versatile improvisers currently active London.

Folklore also, soso. Das kann ja jeder behaupten. Mit dem Zusatz Geometrisch passt es schon besser: An der Archtop-Gitarre, also einer gewölbten Akustischen, sitzt Dirk Serries, an der Bratsche Benedict Taylor, zusammen generieren sie live in der Oude Kloster Kapel zu Brecht in Belgien diese „Geometric Folklore“, selbstredend improvisiert, festgehalten auf ihrem neuen gemeinsamen Album. Es kratzt und klimpert – in der Tat: Folklore kann man ahnen, die Abstraktion zerlegt aber jeden durchaus vorhandenen Ansatz herkömmlicher Strukturen. Das macht dieses Album dann auch hörbar, dass das Duo nicht auf Vertrautes verzichtet, es nur anders zusammenfügt und erweitert.
Man kennt den Sound der Bratsche, man kennt den Sound der Akustikgitarre. Regulär gespielt, streicht erstere schöne Melodien und klimpert zweitere akkurate Akkorde. Das bekommt man beides hier, darauf verzichten Taylor und Serries nicht. Wenn sie richtig Bock haben, lassen sie sogar beide Zustände im selben Augenblick zu, also eine harmonische Szenerie, die an Kammermusik erinnert, an Klassik quasi. Doch der Weg dorthin und von dort wieder weg verläuft über eigenes Gelände, ausgehend davon, dass beide losgelöst vom Tempo des anderen agieren, also ihre Beiträge nebeneinanderlegen, bis hin zu komplett experimentellen oder wilden Ausbrüchen.
Ein Kratzen auf den Saiten der Bratsche gehört für Taylor selbstredend zu solchen Effekten, doch selbst diese generiert er noch angenehm hörbar, weich beinahe. Disharmonien und Atonales gestaltet er ebenso warm und behutsam, er übertreibt nicht. Nicht immer jedenfalls, er kann auch mal die höchsten Tonlagen anschrägen und in die Hundepfeifenregionen seines Instrumentes vordringen, aber das lässt er schnell wieder vergehen. Manchmal entreißt er der Bratsche sogar Töne, die man nicht mit einem Streichinstrument in Verbindung bringen würde. Pizzicato kann Taylor selbstredend auch.
Dagegen hält Serries seine Gitarre, die er alternativ eben nicht zuvorderst als Melodieinstrument einsetzt, auch nicht für Drones oder etwas, was man ansonsten eher von ihm so kennt. Er bedient sie eher rhythmisch, wenn auch frei von festgelegten Taktzahlen, oder wie ein Flamencofrickler, filigran und kunstvoll. Leichtes Akkordeklimpern kann Serries selbstredend ebenfalls, doch lässt er diese hier eher untergeordnet stattfinden. Dafür weiß er durchaus, dass das Griffbrett seiner Gitarre am Hals noch bis zu den Stimmwirbeln Saiten zum Benutzen hat.
Wie der Antwerpener Serries ist auch Taylor an Umtriebigkeit kaum zu bremsen. Der Britische Komponist ist Teil diverser Ensembles, arbeitet für Theater und Film und hat unzählbare Solo- und Projekt-Alben auf seiner Liste. Auch von Serries und Taylor gibt es bereits einige gemeinsame Alben, darunter „Puncture Cycle“, „Obsidian“ sowie die Mitschnitte „An Evening At Jazzblazzt“ und „Live Offerings 2019“, dazu Trio-Alben mit Serries‘ Gattin Martina Verhoeven und das Quasi-Bandprojekt „TONUS: Ear Duration“. Wer hier mit Genrebezeichnungen kommen will, hat etwas Pech: Kammermusik, Free Jazz, Impro, Neoklassik? Alles davon, aber nichts konkret – „Geometric Folklore“ ist eine eigene Schublade.
