Midden het festivalgedruis nood aan een portie pure improvisatie zonder toegevingen? Dan kan je altijd rekenen op het Belgische label New Wave Of Jazz van Dirk Serries. Recent verscheen een driedubbele live-cd opgenomen in PlusEtage (Baarle-Nassau). Twee duo’s en een trio van internationale vakmeesters op dat gebied.

Charlotte Keeffe & Andrew Lisle (29.04.2022)

Drummer Andrew Lisle (Kit Downes, John Dikeman) en trompettiste Charlotte Keeffe (Julie Tippetts, Colin Webster) in een geïmproviseerde paringsdans.

Hun soundtrack: hakkende en stotende percussie enerzijds en scherpe korte trompetnoten anderzijds. De onderliggende ritmiek wordt aanvankelijk alsmaar intenser. Beide performers uiten zich duidelijk intuïtief en organisch aan de hand van rudimentaire codes.

Na zowat een kwartier nemen ze geringe afstand en temperen ze de dynamiek. Ze blijven wel in contact maar laten een tijd hun klanken geruislozer over elkaar heen schuiven. Een interludium waarna ze terug het accent leggen op interactie. Tijdens het tweede deel van de set wordt een licht gewijzigde modus aangehouden met Keeffe die explicieter op de voorgrond treedt.

Alleszins ook voor fans van Karen Willems.

Stefan Keune/Dirk Serries/Benedict Taylor (30.09.2022)

Ultrakorte stroomstoten van Stefan Keune (Paul Lytton, John Butcher) op sopranino, snarengepluk van Dirk Serries op zijn “archtop” gitaar en spielereien van Benedict Taylor (London Improvisors Orchestra, Berlin Improvisors Orchestra) op zijn altviool als eerste korte kennismaking met een trio dat aan de hand van deze basis nadien uiterst omzichtig een verhaal opbouwt.

Kenmerkend zijn de stiltes die even luid klinken als de hoge en scherpe klanken van de muzikanten. De heren illustreren daarbij tot het extreme toe het verschil tussen dialogeren en links leggen.

Martina Verhoeven/Gonçalo Almeida (25.11.2022)

Twee contrabassisten met elk een eigen speelstijl en aanpak. Dat Martina Verhoeven (Onno Govaert, Colin Webster) de laatste tijd vooral achter de piano plaatsneemt en Gonçalo Almeida (Jasper Stadhouders, Chris Speed) veel werkt met multidisciplinaire kunstenaars verrijkt hun taal.

Indrukwekkend en intrigerend hoe ze hun instrument benaderen en hanteren. Beiden kiezen hier wel voor eerder besloten uitvoeringen dan krachtdadige expressie.

Volume 1 in een reeks die ongetwijfeld nog heel verrassend materiaal zal bieden en ongemeen spannend belooft te worden.

Pianist MARTINA VERHOEVEN has been part of the label since day one. Over the years she played together with a significant number of outstanding UK musicians so naturally when there’s something to be celebrated, the decision is easily made to do this in London, one of the main hubs in the UK for the free improvised Martina and we, as the label, like so much. Tomorrow she, along with guitarist DIRK SERRIES, is surrounded by this stellar line-up of UK musicians: ANDREW LISLE (drums), BENEDICT TAYLOR (viola), CATH ROBERTS (baritone sax), CHARLOTTE KEEFFE (trumpet, flugelhorn), COLIN WEBSTER (alto sax), DANIEL THOMPSON (acoustic guitar), TOM JACKSON (clarinet) and TOM WARD (bass clarinet, flute). For this special event artist GINA SOUTHGATE, renowned for her live concert paintings, will capture the full band on canvas.
