REVIEWS
“Charlotte Keeffe is a British trumpeter, improviser, and composer. Andrew Lisle is a fellow British drummer who has played with Keefe in the bands of British clarinettist-guitarist Alex Ward and in sax player Colin Webster’s Large Ensemble, as well as in a duo format. Dirk Serries is a prolific Belgian guitarist, improviser, and the head of the A New Wave of Jazz label. He collaborates with Lisle in the Kodian Trio (with Webster), and in many other free improvised formations. Keefe, Lisle, and Serries played together in Serries’ partner, pianist Martina Verhoeven’s Invites (2024).
Intangible Construct was recorded at the Sunny Side Inc. Studio in Anderlecht in April 2022. It was the trio’s first free improvised recorded session. Verhoeven took the cover photo, and the album was released only in a digital version on the A New Wave of Jazz Bandcamp page.
The album features four untitled pieces deeply rooted in the British school of free improvisation. These pieces are uncompromising, inquisitive, and risk-taking, experimenting with the sonic palettes of the trumpet, the drums, and the archtop guitar using extended breathing, percussive, and bowing techniques. This trio deliberately avoids linear narratives and refuses to subscribe to rhythmic patterns.
This trio established instantly conversational dynamics on the first, shortest improvisation. The trio sketches an enigmatic texture on the second, longest improvisation, first finding evocative, fragile resonances and later gravitating toward a series of explosive collisions. The third improvisation suggests vivid, cinematic images and cements the playful, almost telepathic dynamics of this trio. The last improvisation offers the trio in its most free mode, challenging itself with fast-shifting gestures and eccentric-sounding rhythmic ideas.” Percorsi Musicali – Italy
