Again NIEUW NOTEN treats us with a lovely feature. Apart from Dirk Serries’ ambient-related explorations, Ben Taffijn is the first to review Serries’ upcoming solo acoustic guitar album. The album, scheduled for release on January 15th 2021, is currently available as a pre-order bundle with along with the beautiful solo album by Gonçalo Almeida. “‘Solo Acoustic Guitar Improvisations’ is een totaal ander album, al was het maar omdat je met een onversterkte akoestische gitaar natuurlijk nooit die klankwolken kunt produceren als op de vorige twee albums. Maar er is meer aan de hand: dit album past namelijk perfect bij de nieuwe weg die Serries de afgelopen jaren heeft gelopen, richting de vrije improvisatie en die op dit A New Wave of Jazz volop aan bod komt. Het was dan ook een kwestie van tijd voordat Serries in deze stijl met een soloalbum zou komen. In tien miniaturen verkent hij zijn instrument en de mogelijkheden tot het realiseren van een onverwacht klankspectrum. En dat hij zich daarbij niet beperkt tot traditionele speltechnieken zal u niet verbazen. Neem ‘Grid’ waarin Serries op vervaarlijke wijze de snaren onder handen neemt, ‘Cluster’ waarin hij op benijdenswaardige wijze hermetische patronen te voorschijn tovert en ‘Factor’ waarin alles piept en kraakt. Kortom het betreft hier een weerbarstig album waarin Serries op zoek gaat naar een geheel nieuwe definitie van het begrip schoonheid, één die mij overigens prima bevalt.“
